Just a few of the family from November, starting with my sister-in-law to be, Brenda.  Next is my neice starting early in the tree business.  My grandmother, “Mema,” saw me photographing our cat, Clyde, and didn’t notice me snap this one of her.  I have a goal to make perfect portraits of both my grandmothers.

The Macon Telegraph

Since arriving home in October, I’ve been blessed to freelance quite a bit for my local newspaper.  The photo staff, including Woody Marshall and Grant Blankenship, opened up my eyes to photojournalism years ago, it is an honor to learn from them again.  Here are a few singles from freelancing that I liked.

High School FootballLeft to right, Westside’s Qwunterious Thornton, DeShaun Smith and E.J. Amporful practice before the start of their game against Harris County at Westside High School on Friday, October 9, 2009.

1020_malo_band_night_003This is one frame I liked before my shutter broke.  The first performance of Band Night 2009 begins on Tuesday, October 20, 2009.  Five Houston County high schools and eight middle and high school bands performed at the annual event held at the McConnell Talbert stadium in Warner Robins, Ga.

1104_masn_inline_skate_01A few from an inline skating practice in Warner Robins.  Mach Racing Speed Team’s Assistant Coach, Danny Collier, leads the team in warm-up stretches before the start of practice in Warner Robins, Ga.

1030_masp_fpd_03Close family friends- the Lamberts.  I was shooting this game for the Telegraph when David Lambert, scored a touchdown, I was so proud of him!  First Presbyterian players congratulate David Lambert, center, after he scored a touchdown in the second quarter of their game against Mount de Sales Academy at First Presbyterian Day School in Macon, Ga. on Friday, October 30, 2009.

1024_masp_stratford_feature_02Funny Feature- Stratford varsity cheerleaders left to right, Catherine Kehl, Alex Slocumb, and Kayla Avant wear their rain protection before the start of their home game against Mount De Sales Academy on Friday, October 23, 2009.

1024_masp_stratford_feature_01I knew this was risky.  Little pieces of grass and dirt were flying off the players feet onto me as they ran past, and I thought to myself, I should move now, wait.. just a few more frames, okay..now I need to move..  Too late. the team was gone and all these kids turned and trampled me.  Thankfully no gear or children were harmed, someone did lose a shoe.

1024_malo_haunted_021Maggie McCullough brews a special potion to make children obey their parents during the “Scared Silly” haunted house for kids ages 3-11, which will be going on again on Oct. 30 at the Children’s Museum on Cherry Street in Macon, Ga.

Georgia

Saw my niece Averi Lewis for the first time in 9 months.  She is beautiful.  I’ll be photographing her quite a bit while I’m home in Georgia figuring out the next step.  The only bad part about being home is missing all my people in Ky. Okla. Va. and NH!!!

Isenhower meets Eisenhower

Libby and I drove from Concord, NH to Bowling Green, Ky. after my internship at the Concord Monitor ended in late September.  Our journey took us through some fun sights including Boston, and D.C.  We were able to visit some dear friends and entertain ourselves with car games for significant amounts of time on the interstate.

To love and be loved

Spc. Justin Pellerin, an Army infantryman from Concord, was killed Aug. 20 by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan. He had been deployed since January and was due home in December.  The Monitor has been writing beautiful stories about Pellerin’s life for the last few days, the family gave us permission to attend the funeral yesterday in Pembroke.  Chelsey Pellerin, his 21 year old wife addressed the crowd, “To love and be loved is the greatest gift a heart can know, I feel so lucky to have Justin to love.”

To read the full article by Maddie Hanna, go here, http://concordmonitor.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090830/NEWS03/908309994

That was the most difficult assignment I’ve ever had.  Maddie and I both felt intrusive despite the family’s permission to attend.  As pallbearer’s carried Justin’s casket away his family stood and watched, his sisters and parents, and his wife, far right.  This was supposed to be the lead photo on today’s front page.  It didn’t make it there so I needed to post it somehow, I feel it’s a powerful image that needs to be seen.  Their eyes say it all.
